Protesters stage mock funeral for SSFL cleanup (Ojai Valley News)
“On the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 7, residents of Simi Valley and West Hills, angry over the chemical and radioactive contamination at the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) rocket and atomic energy plant overlooking their communities, staged a mock funeral in Simi Valley outside the Rancho Santa Susana Community Center library for the complete ‘cleanup to background’ at the site they were promised in 2007 by state and federal regulators.
The mock funeral was organized by the Parents Against SSFL, whose founder, Melissa Bumstead, was jolted into action to clean up the SSFL site when her daughter, Grace, was sickened by a rare cancer first detected when she was 4.
Grace Bumstead, who in the last 10 years has twice survived cancer diagnoses and treatment, was the first of the attendees at the mock funeral to lay a rose on the coffin, followed by about 45 others, including a representative from U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman’s office.

Following Lincoln’s half-hour presentation, members of the community were given an opportunity to speak for two minutes at a time to the regulators. None of the 18 community members who spoke supported the Boeing/DTSC cleanup plans. Many were harshly critical.”
